All Aboard for August!

It's time to take a ride on tourist railroad, or visit some train museums. Summer will end sooner than we realize, and with it, the end of hot weather. As the cooler temperatures arrive, we will be preserving some food from the garden for Winter, getting the kids off to school, and attending Fall festivals. Then arrives the crazy time of year known to us retailers as "The Fourth Quarter"
If you have a favorite train store or hobby shop in your area, you might want to check in to see if they are still there, pick up a catalog of newly arriving products, or maybe even pick up a new piece of rolling stock. It's been a very dry Summer for most hobby shops.

The Joy of a Hand-me-Down Train

On Saturday, a customer was telling me about having his grandfather's train set from the 1920's. It is a great thing to have something like that, not only to remember a long-passed relative by, but it is a good thing to realize that you both shared the same hobby. As it turned out, it was also a "Voltamp" train, made in Baltimore, and especially valuable. So his grandfather not only left him a keepsake, but one worth money, which is important, but also irrelevant, as I have never known anyone that inherited such a train to care about the money more that the fact that it was given to him by his grandfather.

Neuschwanstein Castle in Kentucky

In March, we built this replica of the "Mad King Ludwig"
castle in Bavaria for the layout that we are building in Kentucky.
The first photo is the model waiting to be loaded for transport
to the layout site. The next 3 photos show it in the new location.
The last 2 photos show the gardens that were built to help anchor
the castle in it's new environment.

That Quiet Time of Year for Toy Trains

That's right, it's Summer, and nobody is thinking about toy trains at the moment. Enjoy the fun of being outdoors, but Summer will pass, cool days will return, and once again it will be time for our favorite indoor hobby, messin' with the trains. There will be plenty of new catalogs, lots of new items will begin shipping around mid-August, and the cycle will all begin again...
